Website Design and Development Process
Six simple steps to moving online
One of the most important factors in ensuring a successful web site design project is understanding each other's requirements. We need to understand your objectives for your web site, and you need to understand what we need in order to build your web site.
There are a number of steps we follow in order to make the web site design and development process as smooth as possible. Hopefully the following 8 steps will give you a better idea of what the web site design and development process involves.
1.Preparation
I prefer to do some research before getting together. This ensures that we get maximum benefit from our meeting.
Before our meeting, I'll ask you to:
1. complete a Word 'Spec Form' or the online quote form
2. send any marketing material you may have (logo's, brochures)
3. send any inspirational marketing material (developing a theme)
4. email me images/photo's you would like to be part of the home page
There's no pressure to 'prepare' for our meeting. All of the steps mentioned are optional. If you prefer, we can complete the Specification Form at our meeting. It's up to you. If you don't have a logo, we create one for you.
2.Meeting
You may wish to leave some of the following decisions up to me (design etc), or you may have a definite idea of what you want.
When we get together, we'll chat about the following:
- your company background and competitors
- your target market and goals for the website
- your visual design ideas (look and feel, logo, colours, layout)
- web sites that you like and why
- content (text and images) and navigation
- additional features required (form, counter, mouseovers)
- domain name registration, web hosting, search engines, maintenance
- your deadline
3. Home page mock-up
Things are now getting exciting.
A few days after our meeting, we'll email you links to the two mock-ups (images) showing what the home page will look like. For example, here are two mock-ups we proposed for Cape Vistas.
We'll then make any necessary changes to your preferred mock-up and, when you're happy with the site design, we'll sign off the design stage.
We now start building/coding the home page so that it looks like your chosen mock-up. You'll soon need to provide us with the text/images for your website.
4. Home page template
Once we've built the web site home page and tested it in various browsers, we'll upload it to the Virtuallee web site and send you a link to take a look at it.
We'll discuss any minor changes and then sign off the website template. We'll then ask you for the content for your web site (text and images).
We'll also finalise the set up of your web space. We can do this for you, or you can do it yourself. Either way, we can highly recommend a reliable, efficient and affordable web hosting company.
5. Plumping up
We'll now create the rest of your website pages and add the text and images. This is an exciting stage as the web site is now becoming a reality. Once all the content has been added, we'll email you a link to to take a look at the test web site.
6. Going live
If you're happy with the test website, we'll upload all the website files to your web space and your web site finally be online.
Maintenance
To ensure a steady flow of traffic through your web site, you should try to keep adding new content. If people know you that regularly add content and update your site, they will keep coming back. This will also help your search engine ranking. We're happy to provide continued support for your web site, and am happy to make changes and updates where needed.
We'll guide you every step of the way. When your site is online we'll be here to offer advice and suggestions.
Our primary concern and goal is that you're happy with your web site and that we've achieved the goals we set out at our first meeting.
Feedback
To keep us on our toes and ensure that we maintain a high quality service, we welcome your feedback. We'll send you a feedback form, which we'll ask you to complete. It's optional, but we'd welcome any tips or advice on how we can improve our web design service.

www.alisonbranagan.com Lee-Ann constructed my web site for me in summer 2003. I had a general idea of what I wanted, but Lee-Ann came up with the concept, the design, the pictures and logo, and even a slogan. I was very impressed with her attitude, her willingness to help and her energy for her work. She answered all my questions patiently and thoroughly and was always available for extra advice. I was given several different design options, and Lee-Ann talked me through what she thought was good and bad about each design. Throughout the entire process she remained professional, efficient and enthusiastic. I was very happy with the services provided and am happy to recommend her. - Abigail Jacob,
Saving you time
(website no longer online) I also just wanted to say how truly impressed I am with your web site. I think it looks SUPERB and fits in perfectly with your corporate identity/logo. I will definitely be thinking about getting my own space organised very soon and will use the same outfit as you did. It's something that really has got to be done these days, isn't it, and they did a really great job for you. All very exciting. - Comment on www.janeybell.com web site
